A Minimalist Photograph of a Pigeon sitting high up on a Red wall with his shadow being caste behind him, at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur

Minimalism Type: Minimalism as Less Elements

  • Photography Style: Looking up

  • Color Palette: Red and Blue

  • Camera Used: Canon 600D

  • Shot Location: Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur

Aesthetic Elements:

a) Red Wall
b) Blue Sky
c) Light and Shadow aka Natures Art at Play
d) Real World vs Shadow World comparison
e) Lines
f) Negative Space

Major Reason to Shoot:

I wanted to show the Comparison between the Real world being i.e. The Pigeon Versus its Shadow,  being caste right behind it, in this Minimalist Photograph.

To achieve this, I moved to my left so that I could place the shadow on the bottom left of the frame and the Pigeon on the Top right.

This movement also helped me to place Negative Space correctly and to put both my Primary Subject ie. the Pigeon and my Secondary or Complimentary subject aka the Pigeons shadow, on the Rule of Thirds quadrant in the 3x3 Grid camera grid overlay.

Hope that you enjoyed the Minimalist Shot of the Pigeon and its Shadow.

Lines Galore

Minimalism as Simple Geometry

Lines created by both, the Raw Iron Bars and their shadows

I spotted this at the backyard area of "Ravindra Manch, Jaipur" last Sunday.

Of course it was very clear to me that I would be shooting Minimalism as Simple Geometry or Lines.

The Lines were all over the place, because

a) This gray wall had so many Raw Iron Bars in it

b) The overhead Sun was creating long shadow Lines from these bars as well.

I shooting in the landscape or horizontal mode and the photos that were coming out were full of clutter.

So I decided to shoot this in the Vertical mode or the portrait mode. That helped me to do away with a lot of clutter and I could now also add some Negative Space.

Another challenge was how to apply the Rule of Thirds

I pushed myself further away from the wall, that created some distance and made the bars appear smaller in size, adding to the Minimalism feel.

Then, I placed the One Set of the Random Iron Bars arrangement along with it shadows, at the bottom of the frame applying the Rule of Thirds

Later, I added a complimentary subject to the frame, i.e the shadows of the other set of Raw Iron Bar arrangement, just above my primary subject at the bottom.

By Not including the Actual Raw Iron bar set on the top, rather including just its shadows, I left a lot of room for imagination for the viewer. He will look at the bars at the Bottom of the frame and try and imagine a similar set of bars on top of the frame, creating the very long shadow lines.

That's pretty much how I composed this shot.

Hope you enjoyed it.

Stay tuned for more.

Have a nice Day / Evening.

Light Shadow Lines Architecture, is not a Minimalist Title, I agree :)

But, the Photo Definitely is. I chose such a title, so that it becomes easier for the blog followers to immediately comprehend the elements within the Minimalist Photograph.

The Photograph falls under the Minimalism as Simple Geometry Category. The Subject being, primarily just the Lines. That's the Simple Geometry here.

And again this a Look-up Minimal Shot here, taken from my 100mm Canon Prime Macro L Lens.

I'd keep it short today, as I have other thoughts to ponder on after this.

Hope you liked the Minimalist Explanation :)

Have a great day ahead.

Minimalism as Simple Geometry

Black and White Minimalism with Simple Geometric Shapes, is what I have a personal bias for. Such images just hit the head.

Geometry per say, communicates something at a subconscious level. I simply cannot put that into words.

What I found interesting here, was the Rhombus or Diamond like shape appearing on the white pillar and a subsequent Rectangle being formed on the floor, extreme left.

This kind of placement of the two geometric shapes, balanced the frame nicely.

Also I knew, this would look better in Black and White, so I simply de-saturated the image in post processing.

Photo Highlights

  • The photograph falls under the Minimalism as Simple Geometry category of Minimalism.
  • Light and Shadow Play by Nature, always makes the photo stand out. The reason being, when nature is in action, it always paints a pretty picture.
  • The dark scratches on the wall adds extra zing to the image.
  • Location: Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur
  • Lens: Canon 50mm F/1.4 prime
  • Shot Handheld

Bathing in the Sun

Minimalism as Less Elements

Here you have simple geometry bathing in the afternoon sunlight. The composition comprises of one rectangle on the left hand and one rectangle on the right, with empty space/distance between them. The little curved line, formed by the metal pipe under the two geometric part-rectangles, acts as the supporting element which balances off the composition. The advantage of shooting in bright sunlight is that the walls are well lit and you can use shadows to your advantage. Shadows always give your photos an artistic feel.

A Monochrome Minimalist Photograph of the abstract form/shadow of the round dome versus geometrical shapes at Amer Fort, Jaipur

The Juxtaposition between Simple Geometric shapes i.e rectangles and the Abstract shadow/shape  the "Gol Gumbad" or the Round Dome(in English) is shown here.

Wow, that was long and confusing, isn't it? Sometimes, my head just spins while taking such tricky Minimalist Photographs. I try so many different shots and angles and at times I end up erasing all photos of a particular shot/subject and start all over again. This did not happen this time around as finally, I got what I was looking for.

What caught my attention, was the overlapping shadow of the Gumbad on the second rectangle and the way it was curving down to the right. Initially, the shadow flirted for a while with the vertical line of the rectangle but she, probably was not interested and therefore the shadow slipped down further to the right. The key to the shot was, placing right the two rectangles, that's it. Once I did that, I moved a little to the left and the to the right, for adjustment and bang everything was perfect.

Hope you enjoyed the photograph.

A Minimalist Photograph of Staircase with pink wall and shadows.

This shot was taken in the basement parking of a shopping mall. The pink wall and shadows caught my attention.

The lines and geometry were fascinating to look at and to top that, the color palette was absolutely stunning.

Staircases are anyways a favorite Minimal Subject for me and I am always on the lookout for them.

But there is one thing to remember here. Please do not get carried away and include way too much detail in the frame. Because then the shot actually becomes Maximally Minimal.

Alright, there does exist a category by the name of "Maximalism or Maximally Minimal Art" but, in Minimalism it is always ideal to be more "Minimally Minimal" than being "Maximally Minimal".

On a lighter note, If I have still not confused you, you need not subscribe to my blog.

Right angled Triangle Vs the Square

Minimalist Photography as Simple Geometry

I have used light and shadow here to highlight the geometry in the frame. The core of the photo involves two basic shapes.

a) Square and
b) Triangle.

Also, if you observe closely, there is another square being formed within the primary square, because of the light and shadow game-play. The shadow triangle on the bottom left acts as the supporting actor like in films, for the main lead i.e the Square. Keeping the photo to monochrome is always preferable when shooting Minimalist Photography as Simple Geometry as all the shapes and lines get accentuated. The visual impact is more.
