Minimalist Photo of a Bicycle at Amber Fort - Jaipur

I was out on a Photowalk with a group of friends to Amber Fort Jaipur. This Black Bicycle against the Yellow Wall, caught my eye.

There was also Light and Shadow effect on the wall and I was at an appropriate distance. To begin with, I was getting a lot of clutter and it was getting difficult to decide as to what to keep in the frame and what to leave out. I tried going close but then the Bicycle was coming out to be too big in the frame doing away with the Minimalist aspect of the photo.

Therefore, I stepped back and tried the classic way of placing the Subject according to the Rule of Thirds, bottom left of the frame strategy and let all else fall in the frame. With little adjustments here and there, it worked :)

This strategy always works!!!

And Hey I forgot to tell you "India is now under 21 Day Lockdown due to the CoronaVirus" and today is my 1st Day under Quarantine and I decided to do a blogpost to take a break from all the Media Headlines. I guess I will be posting more photos now that I have more free time.

I wish all of you and your family the best of health and safety. Please wash your hands, take your vitamin C and don't forget to take some sunlight.

The Shadows on either side of the Siderail Diagonal Line was what prompted me to capture this subject and create it into a Minimalist frame.

I kept this Photograph colored, as yellow colored walls look fairly pleasing to the eyes.

Also note, I haven't tinkered much with the brightness and contrast of the photograph, as I did not want to overdo anything here.

Light and Shadow Minimalist Photos are a little tricky to edit. Another assumption that you can make is that, I was a bit lazy and therefore I did not make this Photograph pop that much via editing ;) Maybe? ;)

While composing this Photograph the only thing that I had to be careful with, was to shoot the Photograph from the right top-down angle and at the same time leave Negative Space, in a correct manner.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 24-105 mm Prime Lens

  • F-stop: f/4

  • Shutter Speed: 1/ 3200 sec.

  • ISO speed: ISO-100

  • Focal Length: 70 mm

  • Metering mode: Spot

  • Exposure program: Manual

Hope you enjoyed the Siderail Diagonal  Minimalist Photograph.

A Lookup Minimalist Photograph of a Blue Square within a Yellow Wall.

As you can see above this Minimalist Photo is all about "The Blue Square" aka a Simple Geometric Shape. Squares are my favorite shape when it comes to Minimalism as Simple Geometry

Here, you can see a Blue Square. And I hope one day, I collect as many different colored Squares as I can. Ok, lets talk more about the Composition of the Minimalist Photograph.

Shall I? or it is very obvious?

This Photograph was taken right outside the exit gate of Jantar Mantar Jaipur. As you can see, I have used a lot of Negative Space in the photograph. I filled that space with the Blue Sky, and placed my subject at the extreme bottom right.

This, is a perfect example of both: Minimalism as Less Elements and Minimalism as Simple Geometry Photography. It is a matter of choice as to which head you want to categorize this Minimalist Photograph under.

This style of looking up in the sky and shooting is called Look-up or Looking-Up Photography.

By that logic this is a Look-up Minimalist Photograph. Look-up Photography is really very interesting especially when it involves shooting Minimal Art.

You wont find it out, until you try  Look-up Minimalist Photography yourself. Trust me, the results are going to impress you.

If you have had clicked any Look-up Photos or Look-up Minimalist Photographs, make sure to leave a link to that Photograph below. It would be nice to have a look at your Creativity.

Don't worry about not having a zoom lens etc. I took this Photograph from a Canon 50mm Prime Lens. You can even try using the wide angle Mobile Phone Camera Lens, to Explore your Creativity.

Happy Clicking !

Love Arranged By Nature

Minimalism as Less Elements

They met by accident in a lonesome by lane of a busy street. The moment he saw her, he knew she was very fragile and required immense care. He too was fragile as his relationships in the past had not worked out. They met again but very little words were exchanged between them. There was a lot of eye contact. Their souls had identified each other by now and they both felt a connection. The more they spoke to each other over the next few days and months the more they got closer and found how similar they were in so many ways. Their choice of clothes, music, food, view on life, on art were just the same. They were both surprised to learn it. They realized that their bond was really strong and there was no need to say those magical three words "I love you", remaining silent was sufficient.

They could read and communicate with each other using their minds. All was going good but then there was a problem. A very big problem. The problem was, how could all be pre-decided and fixed beforehand? How could it be possible that they both found exactly the kind of person they were looking for, for over a decade? It was unbelievable for both. And so, doubts crept in. The relationship therefore was still hidden from others and not made public, which is depicted here by the "Shadow" of two birds, rather than their real word image. Their Love was arranged by Nature and therefore, they wanted to wait for more signs, more time in the relationship to be really sure before making a public announcement of their love.

Composition

In the shot below, I used my usual Canon 55-250mm lens and did some contrast and color adjustment in an editing software. At first, I was shooting the real world image of the birds but then to their left, I spotted their shadow being cast and therefore I changed my shot.

Of course the rule of thirds has been followed here by placing a) The minimal sky on he top and b) the bird on extreme top right. I could have avoided the black bar below but again it adds to the image. It kind of balances the vast space yellow covers in the frame and compliments the little blue sky by contrasting to it. And there you have it a Minimalist Photo of two birds in love.

Blue Saree

Minimalism as Parts of the Whole

I was trying to shoot this nice textured yellow wall, but then I noticed this woman sitting right next to it ...

...in a striking "Blue Saree"

I loved the contrast of yellow and blue so I decided to make a Minimalist Shot of it. At first I was confused as I had never shot a Minimal before using such a large image of a person, rather I generally shoot objects. This is where the domain knowledge of Minimalism helped me. I quickly realized I could click only a part of the woman, thereby eliminating the human structure and fit it under the Minimalism as parts of the whole category of Minimalism Photography. Composition was tricky to begin with but once I knew that I only have to clip the woman, I got it right in three shots.

Bathing in the Sun

Minimalism as Less Elements

Here you have simple geometry bathing in the afternoon sunlight. The composition comprises of one rectangle on the left hand and one rectangle on the right, with empty space/distance between them. The little curved line, formed by the metal pipe under the two geometric part-rectangles, acts as the supporting element which balances off the composition. The advantage of shooting in bright sunlight is that the walls are well lit and you can use shadows to your advantage. Shadows always give your photos an artistic feel.

Drainage Pipe

Minimalism as in Small Objects

A Minimalist Photo of a cylindrical drainage pipe and its shadow. Accompanied by green algae on the wall.

This is Minimalism as in Small Objects, where my main subject is the Drainage Pipe.

In order to achieve the desired result and to show the pipe as small, I took this shot from a fair amount of distance. Shooting from a distance also helped me add the green algae under the pipe, as a supporting subject and also made the Drainage Pipe look more Minimalist.

You cannot find such shadows, like that of the pipe, on cloudy days or early mornings, so be prepared to go out on a sunny day. Carrying some water along is advisable or else you may well get dehydrated.

Hope you enjoyed the shot. Stay tuned for more.
