A Minimalist Photograph of a Square Versus Abstract Light Squares on a Red Wall at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur.

What I spotted here first, was the Four Light Abstract Squares on the Red Wall. These were formed due to light passing through an open window with 4 glass panes in it, right behind me.

Now, I had to contrast these Abstract Light Squares with something. So, I looked for a Geometric subject to go with it.

There was a Square on the wall next to this one. To include that with the Abstract Light Squares I shot the edge of the two walls and placed one subject on the either end of the frame. This juxtaposed the two subjects nicely.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 24-105 mm Prime Lens

  • F-stop: f/4.5

  • Shutter Speed: 1/320 sec.

  • ISO speed: ISO-400

A Minimalist Photograph of an Abandoned Wooden Table in the backyard of a building.

I carried my Camera to Curious Life Coffee Roasters, C-scheme, one fine day.

COFFEE + MINIMALIST PHOTOGRAPHY?

HELL YES!!!

While I was waiting for my friend to reach the place, I headed to the backside of the building. There, I saw that some kind of construction was going on.

And I found this Abandoned Table lying there. What was interesting that the Abandoned Table had a Colorful Abstract Backdrop.

What else I could ask for?

I was on my Canon 100 mm Prime Macro Lens (as I planned to take some Macro Shots inside the Cafe or Coffee and other stuff)

I stepped back a little as 100 mm lens is already pre-zoomed in, and the subject appears too close.

Then, I composed the shot in the Portrait Mode/Vertically, leaving Negative Space on the Top.

Now that is a fairly simple Minimalist Photograph and the Composition is pretty easy to comprehend.

Let's look at the Technical Specifications of the Photograph in detail below:-

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 100 mm Prime Lens

  • F-stop: f/4

  • Shutter Speed: 1/160 sec.

  • ISO speed: ISO-1000

  • Focal Length: 100 mm

  • Metering mode: Spot

  • Exposure program: Manual

Hope you enjoyed the Abandoned Table Minimalist Photograph.

Twig Spiral

A Minimal Art Photograph of a Twig Spiral and its Shadow shot at Home Sweet Home.

This shot was taken in the backyard of my House. There is this nice plant climbing all over the Wall Fence, forming these Twigs with different shapes and forms.

I used the 100 mm Canon Macro Lens to capture this shot. The composition is relatively simple. I started by focusing on the Twig Spiral on the lowest possible aperture I could, to ensure decent bokeh in the background/background blur.

The other thing I made sure of, was to get the Shadow of the Twig Spiral right under it, also aligned nicely within the Minimalist frame.

I retouched this Photograph quite a lot in the Editor because, some darker areas were too dark and the lighter ones too light.

Though, editing the RAW version consumed a lot of my time but in the end, I am satisfied with the results.

If you have taken a Picture of a Twig Spiral as well, please do share a link of that in the comments.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 100 mm Prime Lens

  • F-stop: f/2.8

  • Shutter Speed: 1/4000 sec.

  • ISO speed: ISO-100

  • Focal Length: 100 mm

  • Metering mode: Spot

A Minimalist Photograph of a Yellow Circle and Blue Semicircle placed on a brown textured wall at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur.

These were handmade circular discs placed at the Entrance wall of Jawahar Kala Kendra. Actually it is a huge wall and it was decorated up to the brim.

All I could spot was a lot of clutter but at the same time I was tempted to carve out a few Simple Minimalist Photographs. I kept thinking and thinking and thinking.

Then my eyes got stuck on these Two Circles. Yes Two Circles, the big Blue Circle and the Small Yellow one.

I thought why not use these to compose a Simple Geometry Minimalist Photograph. The problem was, that the Blue Circle was way too big for me to incorporate it with the Yellow one within the frame and create a sensible Photo Composition.

Therefore, I decided to crop the Big Blue Circle into about half and made it look like a Semicircle in the frame.

Then, I placed the the small Yellow Circle on the top left corner of the frame. This also made me show the interaction between the Two Geometric Shapes and to show some perspective. It also helped me leave some negative space in the frame, both between the circles and to the right of them.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 24-105 mm Prime Lens

  • F-stop: f/7.1

  • Shutter Speed: 1/400 sec.

  • ISO speed: ISO-200

A Look Up Minimalist Photograph of the Side of a Covered Terrace, shot with Canon 6D Mark II Camera and 100 mm lens.

This shot was captured near Chaisa Cafe behind Mahaveer School, MI Road. I was on the 100 mm Macro Lens.

What motivated mere here was the Clear Blue Sky and the Brown/Yellow Part of the Covered Terrace. These two colors we contrasting well and the Squares(simple geometry) in the Acrylic Roof added further interest.

To make the frame look Simple and Minimalist, I very conveniently left Negative Space on the Top and to the Right side of the frame.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 100 mm Prime Lens

This Bamboo Stick Minimalist Photograph was captured in the backyard of Jawahar Kala Kendra.
I carefully placed the Bamboo Stick on the Left side of the frame, to make it appear as a Line and left ample Negative Space on the right, to redirect attention back to the subject aka the Bamboo Stick.

The Perspective is what is different here, and that's what counts the most in Minimalist Photography.

Note: This Photo falls under the Minimalism as Less Elements category and one can also call it Classic Minimalism

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

A Minimalist Photograph of Burn Stains on a Wall.

This Wall is from the Parking Area of "Jaipur Center Mall". It looks like there was a fire in here. Something burned, maybe some wires, and they were removed timely. Otherwise, there would have been more of these Black Burn Stains spread all over the wall.

The Composition has been kept very Simple and Minimalist, by placing the Burn Stains on the right hand side of the frame, following the rule of thirds and by accommodating Negative Space on the left hand side.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

A Colorful Minimalist Photograph of Green Leaves on a Colorful Backdrop, with Negative Space on the Side.

This shot, just like the Last one "Colorful Stripes" was taken at Kalaneri Art Gallery.

After a long time, I have captured some Nature Minimalism.

The Negative Space that I left on the Side, is very Classic of a Core Minimalist Photograph. (though its not necessary that one uses Negative Space in every shot)

What's different this time around, is that the Negative Space has some well aligned geometrically placed colors. That Pops the Shot out !

I was lucky to find a Green Color Strip along with the Green Leaves, and therefore, the overall Color Palette is also kept fairly Minimal.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

A Black and White Minimalist Photograph of a Lone Dove sitting on the Walls of Jawahar Kala Kendra building.

So, Minimalism as in Small Objects is back and I also did a similar shot long time ago at the same place. Here is that shot "Bird Vs Lines"

As you can see, I have placed the Bird in the bottom left corner of the Minimalist Frame and used Leading Lines to point at my subject aka the Lone Dove. (Leading Lines = the white marble wall edges.)

Negative Space is also a key element here. Right before shooting this, I captured the photograph of a Cat that I spotted at nearby.

When I turned back, I spotted this Lone Dove sitting on the wall.

From shooting a Cat to shooting a Dove in a matter few seconds. That is the fun part in Photography :)

Also, I had to make sure to shoot the Lone Dove quick enough, or else it would just fly away.

This Minimalist Photograph was composed on the LCD Screen to get all the alignments right. Thanks to my Canon EOS 6D Mark II Full Frame Camera that comes with fast focusing right via the LCD Screen because of its Dual Pixel focus technology.

This shot was taken near Ganpati Plaza Jaipur, opposite to the Old Gulab Ji Tea Shop.

This is Classic Minimalism with lots of Negative Space (empty space) on the right.

Alternatively, one could argue that this is Minimalism as Parts of the Whole, but that is not my intention here and I personally would not categorize this as that kind of an Image.

I can't explain why but it is kind of obvious that the intention here is more towards showing Less Elements and Negative Space than any other thing. That effort is clearly visible.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

What we have here is A Minimalist Photograph of the Parts of Two Yellow Chairs against the Red Walls of Jawahar Kala Kendra - Jaipur

I spotted these Two Yellow Chairs right outside one of the Art Galleries at Jawahar Kala Kendra

The exhibition was organized by Doon Academy Jaipur and the content of the exhibition was Art made by young school kids out of waste.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the talent of young children. They used Ice-cream sticks, News papers, Ear-buds etc to make wonderful common household items like, Table Lamps, Pen Stands, Wall Mirrors etc.

Right before entering the exhibition, is when I captured this shot.

I was down on my knees for this. I realized that I should be taking more Minimalist Photographs from a low angle.

Also, as promised earlier, I have finally posted a Colored Minimalist Photograph after along time.

One more thing is that shooting Minimalism as Parts of the Whole really makes me happy.

The Two Yellow Chairs have been partially cut and carefully placed in the frame, I did so by me going down on my knees and capturing this Photograph from on a very low angle.

On top of the chairs, you see a lot of Negative Space. This is a very typical Non-busy, Simplistic, and Imaginative Minimalist Photograph.

The EXIF Data for the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Maker: Canon

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 100 mm Prime Macro L Series Lens

  • F-stop: f/5.6

  • Shutter Speed: 1/250 sec.

Above is a shot of 8 Red Roses against a Textured Wall.

This shot was taken at the Entrance gate of "Jal Dhara" Jaipur, a place where young couples go to spend some time with each other. It is basically a garden that is host to a lot of water fountains.

While I was on my way out of that garden (mind you, I was out there only for a photo-walk) I found these set of roses lying in a plastic bucket that belonged to an old woman.

That old woman was actually selling red roses right outside the gate to couples.

While composing the shot, I placed the 8 Red Roses on the bottom left of the frame and left a lot of empty or Negative Space on the sides to make the image look more Minimalistic

The Decayed Textured Wall at the back adds a nice contracts to the fresh Red Roses

The photo falls under the Minimalism as Less Elements category of Minimalist Photography.

Hope that you enjoyed the photograph.

What we have here is a Minimalist Photograph of a Towel Drying On A Clothesline in India on a Yellow Wall.

This was shot at Chandpole Bazaar Jaipur.

I took prior permission from the Shopkeeper before clicking this.

I never showed him what I clicked by the way. And there is a good reason for it.

Well, If I would have showed him that I was shooting just the walls and not photos of his hardware shop (which he presumed would be published in the next day's newspaper, as I look like a news agency hired photographer), he would have probably not allowed me to shoot, thinking that something is wrong with me.

I mean who takes pictures of walls? Yes, some people react this way.

Anyways, Talks aside, I kept it very simple yet again.

I left ample negative space to the left of the frame.

The Yellow Wall is the Highlight here of course.

Also Note: The Colorful Towels contrasts so nicely with the single colored wall.

Hope you liked the shot.

Thank You.

What prompted me to click this?

The Broken nature of the Handle, as you can see the screws have come off.

Also, the Curve the handle has made by regularly rubbing against the Blue Metal Sheet of the Bus.

As you must have observed in many of my Photographs, I prefer shooting a lot from the Side. It gives a unique perspective and most importantly adds certain depth to the frame. That just doesn't happen when shooting dead front.

The above shot of the Glossy Door Handle, too has been shot from the side angle.

I moved this much this time around, to include the red area of the wall which you can see on the extreme right.

The Reason: well, Color Palette. Yes, I do balance the color palette of the frame and that influences my compositions a lot.

Shooting from the side also helped me incorporate a lot of negative space (to the right of the frame) which is another basic element of Minimalist Photography

This shot is again one of those, where an evident subject was not available as such, and therefore I crafted my own subject via my physical movement.

Hope you enjoyed the shot. :)

Looks like this is shot on the beach right?

Well, there is no beach in my City, Jaipur. Its just that one can pull off such shots by finding puddles of water post rains. That is exactly what I did.

I found this large puddle of water at SMS Stadium, Jaipur.

There was a lot of clutter being reflected in the puddle. I took a full 360 degree view and walked around the entire puddle to find interesting reflections.

I spotted a reflection of a Street Lamp to begin with and within in a few seconds, these two Love Birds/Pigeons Flew onto the Water Puddle.

There is an Old Zen Saying that says "When the student is ready, the master appears."

If one relates that to Photography it could mean "When the Photographer is ready, the subject appears."

Yes, indeed The Subject appeared when I was ready. It has happened with me a lot of times before.

Once I had my subject ready, I decided to shoot this in the Vertical/ Portrait mode. That helped me remove some unwanted elements from the frame. I also cropped this photograph to further reduce clutter.

Why I liked the subject despite being very common? was because these birds signify Relationship /Companionship / Love. That was the first appeal. The second was their reflection in water.

In the Minimalist Composition above, I have also left a lot of Negative Space and followed the obvious Rule of Thirds

One important point to note is that, here we have 3 shades or 3 tones of color i.e Light / Medium / Dark. That really pops a Black and White Photograph.

The same principle is followed in Pencil Shading.

The 3 Light/ Medium and Dark tones are the basics of Pencil Shading. I did learn a bit about it last year.

Hope that you enjoyed the Black and White Minimalist Photograph of the Reflection of Two Pigeons above :)

...and the Minimalist or rather maybe not so Minimalist Description.

See you next time.

Bye !
