The above Minimalist Photograph of the Sitting Vs Flying Bird was shot near Ravindra Manch, Jaipur - India.

I was there in the parking lot. I had just parked my scooter and I was supposed to proceed for  the Jaipur Art Summit.

I looked over my right shoulder and I saw some birds flying across the sky, especially over the street lamps.

Then, one of the birds aka a Pigeon came and sat on top of one of the Street Lamps. I got interested, right away.

But, I did not want to shoot the Vanilla shot of just the bird sitting on the lamp and nothing else in the scene. Therefore, as a first step I included another Street Lamp in the shot.

OK, so now I had two Street lamps in my frame and a pigeon sitting on one of them.

About 6 months ago I had taken a Mobile Photograph of a group of birds sitting on the wire Vs a group of birds flying across the sky (opposites). That was not a timed shot, rather it was a gift from mother nature. But, I wasn't happy with myself as I wanted a similar shot from a DSLR Camera.

So, this was my chance, and this time I waited for the right moment to create the shot.

I switched my view from the View Finder of the camera to the LCD Screen. Then I moved the focus point on the pigeon sitting on the first street lamp, pressed the shutter button half-way and then waited for more birds to come into my frame.

Initially, a group of birds flew in, but the shape of each bird flying past did not came out the way I wanted, so I disregarded those shots.

I knew I did not have much time as the resting pigeon might fly away any moment.

I waited 30 more seconds and this time I got this lone Black Bird enter my frame and this time I was happy with the shape of her open wings.

So now We know how I created this composition in a Step-wise, Staggered manner.

First one Street Lamp, Later that lamp with a Bird sitting on it, and then another Street Lamp and finally a Black Bird flying across.

Now that we have talked about the composition part, lets also quickly check the Minimalism Classification.

The Photo falls under the Minimalism as Less Elements category of Minimalist Photography.

The Only elements being, just the Birds and the Lamps.

Hope you enjoyed the shot.

Lines Galore

Minimalism as Simple Geometry

Lines created by both, the Raw Iron Bars and their shadows

I spotted this at the backyard area of "Ravindra Manch, Jaipur" last Sunday.

Of course it was very clear to me that I would be shooting Minimalism as Simple Geometry or Lines.

The Lines were all over the place, because

a) This gray wall had so many Raw Iron Bars in it

b) The overhead Sun was creating long shadow Lines from these bars as well.

I shooting in the landscape or horizontal mode and the photos that were coming out were full of clutter.

So I decided to shoot this in the Vertical mode or the portrait mode. That helped me to do away with a lot of clutter and I could now also add some Negative Space.

Another challenge was how to apply the Rule of Thirds

I pushed myself further away from the wall, that created some distance and made the bars appear smaller in size, adding to the Minimalism feel.

Then, I placed the One Set of the Random Iron Bars arrangement along with it shadows, at the bottom of the frame applying the Rule of Thirds

Later, I added a complimentary subject to the frame, i.e the shadows of the other set of Raw Iron Bar arrangement, just above my primary subject at the bottom.

By Not including the Actual Raw Iron bar set on the top, rather including just its shadows, I left a lot of room for imagination for the viewer. He will look at the bars at the Bottom of the frame and try and imagine a similar set of bars on top of the frame, creating the very long shadow lines.

That's pretty much how I composed this shot.

Hope you enjoyed it.

Stay tuned for more.

Have a nice Day / Evening.

Windows in Repetition Vs The Green Tree

Minimalism as in Repeating Shapes

Windows of a building in Jaipur in repetition, creating a nice pattern that gets broken by the placement of the Green Tree on the bottom left corner of the Minimalist frame.

This shot falls under the Minimalism as in Repeating Shapes Category. What we have here, is a repetition pattern created by the Windows of the rooms of a hotel in Jaipur.

I have purposefully placed the Green Tree on the bottom left corner of the frame, so as to break the Pattern of Repetition. Without the Green Tree, the shot would be too vanilla, at least for me.

I shot this from an over-bridge, in-case you were wondering from where I got the height in the frame. Its the result of the over-bridge elevation, that I am looking-up but yet my view is kind of flattish or parallel to the ground.

Other than the height, the 100 mm Macro Lens helped me to shoot this comfortably from a distance.

Hope that you enjoyed the shot and the Minimalist explanation ;)

Stay tuned for more.

Parallel Rectangles

Minimalism as Simple Geometry

A colorful lookup Minimalist Photo comprising of parallel rectangles, yellow walls and blue sky.

This Minimalist Photograph was captured at Jantar Mantar, Jaipur. I wanted to show the contrasting colors yellow and blue here, along with simple geometrical shapes i.e. Lines and the two Rectangles.

I placed one rectangle on the top left (rule of thirds quadrant) and one on the bottom right (rule of thirds quadrant). So the result was two vertical parallel rectangles being joined by one line entering the frame from the left running over to the rectangle on the right. Editing the blue sky took me a lot of time. Showing sky the way it looked to the naked eye or showing the blue as blue, takes a lot, believe it.

It is basically a look-up Minimalist shot, where you basic look up towards the sky and try and capture something. It takes a bit of practice capturing Minimalist Photographs the look-up way. At first, you would feel as if you are not able to spot anything worthwhile. The trick is to keep hitting the shutter button and reviewing what you clicked. This will give you a fair idea as to what to click and what to let go.

Hope you enjoyed the Photo. Stay tuned for more.
