A Simple Minimalist Photograph of a Pigeon Sitting on a Red / Orange wall versus the Long Shadow of a Water Outlet, shot at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur.

This Photograph comes from an old Album that has a lot of pictures captured at JKK or Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur.

I was checking that folder to see how the walls used to look back then, as all of them were Red/Orange in Color.

But Now, most of the walls at this place have been painted to a dull brown-beige kind of a color.

I really do not like the new paint color. Sometimes because of the new color the vibe doesn't feel the same as it used to be and I ask myself this question "Is this place Jawahar Kala Kendra designed by Charles Correa?" or just any other Art Center?

Anyways, lets leave aside that color talk and take a look at the some the highlight of the Minimalist Photograph below.

The bird that wished she never had wings

She was leading a simple life. It used to be fun to fly to unexplored places every morning and be back by the evening to rest in the nest. The nest that she had rebuilt with a lot of effort. When she was young a vulture had killed all her family and destroyed their nest. She was the sole survivor. As time passed she became very strong and everything was good for quite a while. Then one fine morning she decided to fly very far, to a place where she had never been. There she made friends with a bird and soon fell in love with him. Suddenly her life changed and it was all so very beautiful. She made up her mind and decided to fly back to him, confess everything and be together with him for the rest of her life. That day was special indeed, everything was perfect until a storm hit and soon there was rain. They both decided to protect themselves and therefore flew to a nearby tree which had a hole in it. They both were lost in love and therefore they could not sense the danger that is always imminent from other predatory birds. There was an attack and it was a vulture again. She managed to save her life but the love of her life was lost. She was devastated and broken. The fence she is sitting at is near the tree where the attack took place. Three days have passed but she hasn't moved an inch. She regrets flying to this place. This would have never happened if she never had wings is what she concluded. So she gave up on flying forever and decided that she will be at the fence, till she loses her consciousness.

Back to the photo. The photo was taken at 7.17 am. As you can see the sun was pretty bright so to cut down the light I used an aperture value of f/11 on my camera. I was on my 50mm 1.4 canon prime lens. I was pretty close to the bird and therefore I dint want to go beyond f/11. To cut down the light further I set the shutter to 1/4000 sec. The ISO speed was 400. Since I was shooting in the Full Manual Mode like I always do, I had to move my fingers very fast or else the bird would have flown away before I was at the right camera settings. In hindsight, I could have done better with an ISO speed of 100 and adjusting the shutter accordingly, If the subject wasn't a bird I would have delivered on that, just a slight miss but there is always a next time.

Composition is Minimalism as Less Elements. Here we have two or lets say three elements including the fence. Frame is simplistic with two thirds negative space on the top.

Cloud Vs the Lamp

 Minimalism as Less Elements

Here, I have shown the juxtaposition between two shapes/forms

a) the Abstract Cloud, having no particular form or shape, Versus
b) The Curve of the Lamp, which has a clearly defined form/shape.

As you can see I have left negative space on the left, to make the interaction between the two forms/shapes stand out. It was a very tricky shot as and I had to maneuver a lot. I moved quite a bit to my left, to first get the cloud right behind the lamp visually. The cloud  was way above the lamp and there was a huge gap between them. To correct that, I moved near the lamp by walking towards it, and went down on my knees to bring the cloud down. The final adjustment was positioning the lamp right in the center of the moving cloud.

The Minimalism Classification:

Minimalism Type: Minimalism as Less Elements

The Elements: Lamp, Cloud, Small Bird

A Black and White Minimalist Photo of a Bird sitting on the wall, with lines complimenting it.

This Minimalist Shot was taken at Jawahar Kala Kendra - Jaipur, using Two Colored walls of different colors to show Contrast between them. Later during editing, I turned the Photograph into Black and White and that further enhanced the contrast between the two walls.

This Photograph has been intentionally captured from a distance, so that the size of the Bird appeared very small, making it a perfect fit for the "Minimalism as in Small Objects" category of Minimalist Photography.

A Word on the Composition.

The Little Bird sitting between two Diagonal Lines caught my eye to begin with. I had to be fast enough, which I was, so that the Little Bird did not fly away during the composition of the Photograph. Thankfully, the Little Bird stayed long enough and I had a decent Black and White Minimalist Photograph.

This is a Multi-layer shot. There is some distance between the two walls. The light gray one is nearer to the frame and the dark gray one is quite far. I joined these two sections visually and placed the Little Bird nearly at the intersection of the lines of the Two walls.

Also, I had to move a lot to my left and right, and I tried various combinations and angles to get this right.

The Bird looks as if it was trying hide behind the light by Camouflaging.
This is Minimalism as in Small objects. As you can see here the size of the bird is extremely small and that is the primary subject. To achieve the small size, a simple way is, not to get too close to the subject and shoot from a distance.

The white background you see is the clear blue sky which I have de-saturated via photo editing. To add a bit of spice to the image I turned the camera in my hand to so that the street lamp tilted a little to the left and that added a sense of movement to the image.
