Colorful Drapes Vs Street Lights

Minimalism as in Less Elements

A Minimalist Photograph of Colorful Drapes across the sky Versus Two Street Lights, shot at Ganpati Plaza Jaipur.

I went to Ganpati Plaza Shopping Complex in October 2018, a few days before Diwali Festival that was in November. The Shopping Complex was decorated with Colorful Drapes and fancy lights. It is a tradition here in India. Most of the Bazaars are decorated right before Diwali and they host huge discounts to promote their Sales.

While I was on the Ground Floor, I looked up at the Drapes and mentally composed a Few shots with  only the Colorful Drapes and Blue Sky.

Then I wondered, if I could get a bird flying across the frame. But, since it was still not evening, the chances of birds flying past my pre-composed frame were fairly slim.

Therefore, instead of waiting for a bird to fly across my frame, I chose these Static Curved Street Lamps instead.

Since the Key Subject here are the Two Street Lamps, I started my composition with them by placing them at  the bottom right corner of the frame.

Then, I adjusted my movement to fit in the Colorful Drapes. There were other Colored Drapes as well, but I chose these Olive and Reddish ones, for they made for a better Color Palette.

The EXIF Data of the Photo is as follows:

  • Camera Model: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

  • Lens: Canon 100 mm Prime Lens

  • F-stop: f/7.1

  • Shutter Speed: 1/800 sec.

  • ISO speed: ISO-100

  • Focal Length: 100 mm

  • Metering mode: Spot

  • Exposure program: Manual

Black Crow

Minimalism as Less Elements

A Black and White Photo of a Black crow sitting on top of a Street Lamp on the Streets of Jaipur, India.

Here we have a Black Crow sitting on top of a Street Lamp.

This is the second shot from the same place i.e Albert Hall Jaipur, that I am posting here.

The earlier posted shot was in the landscape format.

The other difference between the two Minimalist shots is that here the Bird / Black Crow is sitting on top of the Street Lamp, whereas in the other shot, the Bird is seen flying across the Street Lamp.

Here is the link to the shot that I had posted earlier:

Please Note: Both Shots Fall under the Minimalism as Less Elements Category.

The Photo Settings, editing style is nearly the same, even the Exif Data is very similar.

Let me know in the comments below, which one of the Two Minimalist Photographs / Shots did you find better and Why?

V-Shaped Recovery

When everyone gives up on you, don't lose heart. It is that very point from where you hit bottom, a V-Shaped Recovery happens. The same happens in the economy and the stock markets. I am sure many of us have seen those examples unfold in front of us many-a-times before.

So next time you feel that all is over, feel a little upbeat and hopeful. You might just be hovering near bottom. Life has the tendency to average out either extremes and everything eventually reverts to mean. I used the downward trending red line of a textured wall (texture representing struggle) to make it visibly connect to the starting point of an upward curving street light thus creating the alphabet "V". The upward curve lies in clear blue skies, signifying good times. To compose, I used random twisting and turning of the camera in my hand to the point where I could visually connect the line and the curve.

This shot was taken at a Petrol Pump on Ajmer Road, Jaipur. Another Look-up Minimalist Photo that I took on that pump was this Sky is the Limit

Cloud Vs the Lamp

 Minimalism as Less Elements

Here, I have shown the juxtaposition between two shapes/forms

a) the Abstract Cloud, having no particular form or shape, Versus
b) The Curve of the Lamp, which has a clearly defined form/shape.

As you can see I have left negative space on the left, to make the interaction between the two forms/shapes stand out. It was a very tricky shot as and I had to maneuver a lot. I moved quite a bit to my left, to first get the cloud right behind the lamp visually. The cloud  was way above the lamp and there was a huge gap between them. To correct that, I moved near the lamp by walking towards it, and went down on my knees to bring the cloud down. The final adjustment was positioning the lamp right in the center of the moving cloud.

This Minimalism as Less Elements Minimalist Photo, is a corner shot of a building taken during a sunny afternoon.

The Light and Shadow games played by nature, are always interesting and this Minimalist Photograph captures that. Look at how beautifully the shadow of the lamp got split by three lines. I spotted this Triple Split near the Akshardham temple in Vaishali Nagar.

This photograph has depth and dimension and therefore is way better than flat photos. You may try and include more depth by getting really creative with angles. The highlights, as you can see are quite bright and some portion has lost a bit of detail. It is actually just on the limits. A step further and the details would be lost completely. Why I did this? to make the shades of gray stand out among each other and to show clearly the light and shadow differential.

Minimalist Reflection of Street Light

A Minimalist Photograph of the Reflection of street light in stagnant water on the road.

There is only one element in the frame i.e the Minimalist Reflection of Street Light, in the puddle of stagnant water.

The subject is placed on the bottom right corner so as to follow the Rule of Thirds. A lot of Negative Space has been left on the top, to make the eye wander in the frame and find the subject eventually.

Such compositions are very tricky, and you only get them right with loads of practice. Shooting water reflections could take hundreds of wrong photos. I spotted this arrangement after looking over at about 10-12 water puddles.

You have to bend down every-time, move 360 degrees around it to check what can be spotted in it. Once you find the right subject in the puddle, try various angles and combinations, by varying the degrees at which that you bend.

Hope you enjoyed the post.

Stay tuned for more Minimalist Photographs!

Unsuccessful Camouflage

Minimalism as in Small Objects

A black and white Minimalist Photo of a small bird trying to hide behind a street light.

The Bird looks as if it was trying hide behind the light by Camouflaging.
This is Minimalism as in Small objects. As you can see here the size of the bird is extremely small and that is the primary subject. To achieve the small size, a simple way is, not to get too close to the subject and shoot from a distance.

The white background you see is the clear blue sky which I have de-saturated via photo editing. To add a bit of spice to the image I turned the camera in my hand to so that the street lamp tilted a little to the left and that added a sense of movement to the image.
